Glory to God (Shepherd's Word)

about

This Christmas season, experience the account of Jesus the Messiah's birth through the eyes of a disbelieving shepherd named Simeon (Luke 2:8-20).

He is despised by the high and mighty and under Rabbinic ban by those who count on him to provide spotless lambs to the Temple. He sees the perpetual sacrificial system as inefficient and inessential. To him, the Scriptures are fictional stories that teach morals.

Living amid expectation of Israel's salvation from Roman rule, the persistent evil in the world causes him to doubt the reality of God's existence. However, the pain and suffering he's witnessed in his life will pale in comparison to what he is about to see.

Only believing what he sees, he is granted the most amazing sights in the world that first Christmas night. God breaks His silence over four centuries with the Host of Heaven to the lowly people the world forgot.

May your doubts be answered this Christmas as you begin Simeon the Shepherd's journey on that fateful night and are reminded of the greatest gift of all - the presence of God in the person of Jesus.

lyrics

[Verse 1: Simeon to the Shepherds]
Listen up!
We're living like outcasts and I'm tired of it, shepherds (Micah 4:6-7)
They have made us just a little higher than the lepers (play on Psalm 8:5)
This job's stressful, it's just another day, another shekel
Tendin' these lambs intended for sacrifice in the Temple (Mishna, Shekalim, VII, d; Alfred Edersheim, The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, Book 2, Chapter VI, p. 131)
We make sure they’re not hurt, damaged or blemished
But with no dirt in the herd, they're still destined to perish
I don't believe my life's in the hooves of these worthless sheep (Psalm 40:6)
That need to be kept safe from beasts of prey like wolves and thieves
That's as foolish as Daniel's friends unhurt by furnace heat (Daniel 3:8-30)
It's about time that this blind faith and silly worship ceased!
We abide each night in groups like Israelites in booths (Leviticus 23:42-43)
All for some old stories meant for moralizing youth?
Made up stories to have us work these hours on this job
Like a Messiah announced at the Tower of the Flock (Micah 4:8; Genesis 35:16-21; Mishnah)
Those stories are all passed down lies that got past the scribes
If God spoke through the prophets, why won't He chat now, guys?
If God really loves me, why's my life in this mess? (Jeremiah 31:3)
They say He's powerful and good, but might I suggest
If that is true, then why does He let us suffer and die?
And why's the land full of lovers and mothers who cry?
They say God judged Egypt and delivered these people (Exodus 12:12, 51, 14:30)
But He won't deliver us, it's time for an upheaval!
(Bang) Oh, God! What was that? Look, there's a bright man standing
He's saying something...now there's countless more chanting! (Psalm 103:20-21, 148:2)

[Chorus: Army of God]
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased

[Verse 2: Simeon to Mary and Guests]
Hello!
We came from the fields, we just witnessed a miracle
Began as any other night, boring and typical
'til the dark of night suddenly became bright as day (Isaiah 9:2; 2 Chronicles 5:14, 7:3)
Blinded, we turned our eyes away, turned back and our fright was great (Isaiah 6:5)
'cause we saw an angel knowin' that we're buried to our necks in sin
It felt like we were facing our day of reckoning
But he turned our fears to hope, said that he was here to show
The One promised by seers who wrote hundreds of years ago (Genesis 49:10, Deuteronomy 18:15, 18)
Said, "Don't be scared", then declared this good news that we share
Great joy to all! So there's no more need to despair
And he said, "This is the sign to you, you'll find a newborn babe
Lyin' in a manger, with binding, too"
Now we see that what he said wasn't a lie, it's true!
And after he spoke, there came into sight an innumerable
Multitude of angels in the light-filled sky
Praising God for this lil' guy prophecies will be fulfilled by! (Isaiah 9:1, 5-7, Genesis 3:15, Numbers 24:17-19, 1 Samuel 16:1, 4, Isaiah 11:1, 10)
And for peace on earth as they faded away
Over 500 years, we've had to patiently wait! (2 Kings 24:17-25:21)
So thanks be to God that the silence is shattered
We will be liberated! That is why this kid matters (Psalm 14:7)
We now must hurry and leave back to our herd of sheep
Please tell the sirs and ladies of what we've heard and seen
The reason we hurried here, huffin', puffin', and pantin'
An angel appeared to us, the Host of Heaven was chanting

[Chorus: Army of God]
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased

[Verse 3: Simeon to the People]
Good morning!
Something has happened that is out of the norm in the fields
Something that we shepherds are still absorbing
An angel burst forth with no warning, this message, reporting:
"Born to you today in the city of David, your Lord is!" (Micah 5:2-5a)
I know it seems absurd, but we can't deny what we've observed
This baby that we searched even had a sign so we'd confirm
So we rushed into town, all dirty and smellin' (Mishna)
Our witness in court is not worthy of tellin' (Talmud, Sanhedrin 26; Jeremias, TDNT 6:489)
But we've witnessed the Lord, in this world, He is dwellin'! (Isaiah 7:14; Psalm 2:7, 110:1)
He's the One to be King whom God's words are foretelling (Jeremiah 23:3-8, 33:14-16, 2 Samuel 7:12-17, Psalm 132:11, Malachi 3:1-2, Zechariah 3:8, 6:12, 9:9, Isaah 4:2, 42:1, Daniel 7:13-14, 9:24-25, 1 Chronicles 17:10b-14)
We caught a glimpse of the Most High.. in a low place (Isaiah 61:1)
Around darkness and dirt, 'cause the guest room had no space
We may not be allowed at the Temple and synagogues
But as they seek Him in those places, we stood with our God
Born of a virgin is your King, so we are urging (Isaiah 7:14)
You to trust the One sent to comfort all who are hurtin' (Isaiah 40:1-5, 49:13, 52:9, 61:2, 66:13, Micah 7:19, Jeremiah 31:13, Zechariah 1:17, Lamentations 1:16)
Please don't resist this message, He's come to fix the wreckage (Psalm 118:25-26)
Tell the rich, the peasants and please don't miss the zealots (Job 34:19)
Yes, He's come with vengeance, yet with the humblest entrance (Isaiah 35)
His Kingdom is endless, He's a humongous present!
And it all began as our sheep grazed and now we praise
And before you think that we are behavin' like we're crazed
He's still lyin' in the manger, just like when we went in (Psalm 72:9a)
As the angel said before the Heavenly Army was chanting (Joshua 5:14)

[Chorus: Army of God]
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
Glory to God in the highest
And on earth, peace
With whom He is pleased
